Selamat Tinggal, Palembang!

My experience in Palembang was liberating. As a solo traveller, to come to this off the beaten path places is thoroughly enriching… It’s a loneliness feel, yes. But not the kind of melancholic loneliness… No, it’s actually a joyful kind. To arrive here, to be looked upon, feeling like you are the stranger, the outsider makes you feel lonely… It’s up to the traveller to assume its true condition and learn from that loneliness…

Krevit Wara Wiri. Took a fantastic scooter ride around town… Thanks for your kindness.

Stares at first. Delightful chats a moment later.

Children of Palembang

In Palembang, Sumatra. I walk around the city for about for hours, getting lost only to be found again. During that time, I didn’t see one single tourist, one single westerner. Everybody stopped and looked, intrigued but also showing their best smiles and saying hello. Sometimes they were shy, sometimes they stopped and chatted. The children though, they can’t lie… Every single one of them approached and spoke to me and I was even invited to play a decisive football match. And a new nickname… It’s amazing how children can find everything in so few…
